Like many people who live with diabetes, Rich Smith is a affected by a condition known as Charcot foot. A result of the nerve damage that can be caused by diabetes, Charcot foot can lead to significant deformation of the foot and can even require amputation in extreme cases. Since there is nerve damage in the foot, people are often not fully aware of the pain and so continue to walk and worsen the damage.

For Rich, this condition has had a definite impact on his life. Before discovering custom shoes from Sole Experience he wasn’t sure he would ever be able to walk comfortably and pain-free again, or at all if the condition progressed as it had. He was concerned about how he would be able to work and go about his day to day life when he knew that walking could continue to worsen things, especially when it was difficult to judge the pain he was experiencing.

Rich was aware of orthotics and special shoes, but he was looking for more than the drug-store inserts that were often generic and one-size fits all. There seemed to be plenty of shoes made for athletes and sportswear but none of those took into account his specific needs and none of them fit his feet comfortably.
